No fresh fish here

Many fish types offered on menu but all are frozen only! In a city the size of Portland, in one of the most historic districts you fail to offer nothing fresh? Salad and check please.

Hawthorne Fish House

If you are feeling like fish and chips Hawthorne is the place to go. Hawthorne practically fries any fish so there are many options. They also have sweet potato fries which are delicious. Casual but friendly atmosphere and great service.

Excellent Fish & Chips in Portland

One of Portland's best kept secrets when it comes to fish & chips and such is the Hawthorne Fish House, located just east of one of Portland's more eccentric and hip neighborhoods on SE Hawthorne. Small and unassuming, the Hawthorne Fish House has the feel of a neighborhood pub and, as such, serves a nice selection of regional micro brews with its seafood. The menu features 8 or 9 varieties of fish 'n chips with various types of fish (Perch, Cod, Halibut, Walleye, Oysters, Catfish, Prawns & more) along with other seafood dishes. Most of the food is deep fried, but they use (I believe) rice oil, and have an elaborate filtration system that produces the deep fried treats without any grease. (Or so the menu says) It must be better for you I would think, and it definitely tastes great! Also, the oyster shooters are really good - as of this posting only $5.95 for half a dozen.
Related to the Corbett Fish House in Johns Landing, they claim to be dedicated to "sustainable seafood practices", purchasing only seafood that is compliant with sustainable standards. Whatever! The food is great. The atmosphere is laid-back and relaxed and you should check it out when you visit PDX.
