Walk among the cliff dwellings and pueblos where people lived only 800 years ago. Experience the dramatic geology, varied vegetation, and abundant wildlife that made their lives possible. The strenuous one-mile Island Trail descends into Walnut Canyon; the shorter Rim Trail offers overlooks, forest, and a pithouse. Open every day except Christmas 9:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m. Extended summer hours; please call.

  1. Only Minutes Away - Step Back 1000 Years in Time

You drive only 7.5 miles east of bustling downtown Flagstaff to Exit 204 and adventure south three miles to the quiet Walnut Canyon rim. There you find what some local anthropologists call the best little museum on the ancestral Puebloan culture. The small amount of time that you'll invest in the museum and the video will give you a complete overview of the prehistoric account of the people of the area. I recommend that you start your visit to the Flagstaff area National Parks and Monuments here.

The park is open until 5pm and so convenient to Flagstaff that you could do a quick retreat before checking into your Flagstaff motel room. The Visitor Center is perched on the edge of Walnut Canyon and offers views into the wilderness below. The Island Trail down may still be blocked by a recent boulder slide, but no worries, the monument is still worth a visit. Your entry fee - if you buy the Local Passport for $25 which admits the pass holder and three adults (children are free) - will be good for future trips to Wapatki and Sunset Crater National Monuments. (Does not include the Grand Canyon National Park.)

I buy the America the Beautiful pass which admits the pass holder and three adults (children are free) at per person fee areas - which includes the Grand Canyon National Park - for one year for only $80. Seniors $10 for a lifetime pass.

Day passes into Walnut Canyon National Monument are $5 per person (children free).
