  1. Rio Cafe - a nice surprise

Our party of 7 chose the Rio cafe as our after-theater matinee early dinner destination and we were all delighted.
The menu offered many interesting items not seen on local menus. There were interesting appetizers and drinks and delicious desserts.
Everything was delicious and service was efficient, friendly and attentive. The wine list is not extensive but is adequate for a small cafe with most items being available by the glass or bottle.
We all decided we would go there again.
They offer a lunch and dinner menu and a Sunday brunch
    and happy hour

Update October 2009 - Despite current economic conditions, this place is still in business and is still excellent. I ate dinner there Sunday evening and everyone in my after 6 person party was again delighted with the food and the friendly service

  2. Rio Cafe Hits the Spot

Two weeks ago a friend asked me to meet him at Rio Cafe for the Chicken and Wild Mushroom Enchiladas. There were no options offered or discussed. He had those enchiladas on the brain and, two weeks later (yestereday) when we were at Rio, he didn't even look at themenu but ordered what he'd been thinking of for two weeks! Me, I had the fixh tacos (an amazing breaded white fish with some kind of zesty/spicy sauce and a sweet mango salsa in a handmade tortilla!). Neither of us were let down. Dare I even say that the lunch was fantastic. A wonderful middle of the week treat.

Beyond the food, the atmosphere is really nice. The prices are a little on the high end for a casual lunch. (Over $40 for 3 people) It is a small restaurant, but not cramped. It is light and comfortable. The service was friendly and quick. All in all a great experience. Many Tucsonans may miss the previous inhabitant of the building; a upscale Cajun restaurant, but I love Rio and am a new fan. I hear it's great for dinner too and can't wait to try it out.

The owners claim that Rio "draws on the Latin America’s rich flavors and cuisines and fuses them with traditional dishes of North America. Bringing a unique and fresh menu to Tucson." I loved it. See for yourself.

Note: Rio Cafe is also a member of the Tucson Originals, a group of restaurants that are privately owned and Tucson grown. I love to support non-chain restaurants and local businesses.
