Impressive dam
The construction of the Roosevelt Dam in 1905 created Roosevelt Lake; the Salt River provides the water for the lake. At its completion in 1911 the dam was the largest masonry dam in the world and Roosevelt Lake was for the world's largest lake. in 1989 the dam was renovated and raised to 357 feet, increasing the size of the reservoir by 20%. The original dam with its masonry blocks is now covered by new concrete. The new bridge that was built to reroute traffic from the dam is the longest, two-lane, single-span, steel-arch bridge in North America.
