I love this place. The Speakeasy was an old-timer bar when I first experienced it - a place where blue-collar folks and the Social Security set drank away their afternoons. A couple of years ago it changed hands - it's now "Gil's Speakeasy" - and it's evolved some. The same working and retired crowd still are at home here, but it's also become a favorite of hip but hipster-hating punk rockers, rockabilly cats and scooter kids.
No pretention, cheap drinks, and a mean French Dip sandwich. Nice shuffleboard table and pool. Punk but attitude-free waitstaff. Mix of oldies and punk / ska / oi music usually playing, but not blasting. Video gambling for those with that special second addiction.
This place is a perfect hideout - open by lunch, dark, and while not windowless, it's not a place where someone (wife? boss?) is accidentally going to catch you getting your drink on. Walking distance from downtown, and accessible to the still-large inner SE industrial area.
