  1. St. Anthony's Greek Orthodox Monastery

In July 1995, five fathers came to the barren Sonora Arizona desert from the Holy Monastery of Philotheou, Mount Athos, Greece, and began working to build St. Anthony’s Monastery. Within nine years, the brotherhood has increased to its present number of 40 fathers. St. Anthony’s Greek Orthodox Monastery follows the “cenobitic” way of monastic life, which means “common way of life”. Generally speaking, all things are common to all and everyone follows the same daily schedule, under the discretion of the Abbot, the head of the monastery. Meals are eaten together, and the work, rest periods, and services are conducted according to the monastery’s schedule. It is a Holy Monastery of Our Lord Jesus Christ; that is, a place of repentance and redemption for those men leading a monastic life and for pious pilgrims.
St. Anthony’s welcomes all visitors, Orthodox men and woman visit for a few days of spiritual growth and quietude. Pilgrims may be accommodated at the monastery’s guest facilities.
St. Anthony’ Day visitors can view the chapels and walk the grounds between 10:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. daily. All guests are to be appropriately and modestly dressed. Men are asked to wear long pants and long-sleeved shirts. Women are to wear long skirts (well below the knee), long-sleeved blouses, and scarves. A limited supply of clothing is available at the bookstore. Upon entering the monastery, all visitors are asked to stop at the gate house. Smoking within the monastery grounds is strictly forbidden. Photographs of the buildings, the grounds, and the church interiors are allowed. Visitors may not photograph monks or over-night pilgrims.
