Vasa Museum: Vasa Museum
This is a very, very nicely done museum. Interestingly there is only one big attraction in the museum: the famous warship Vasa which sank half an hour into its maiden voyage in 1628. The ship was salvaged in 1961 and is now on display at this museum that was built to house the ship. What makes the musem so interesting is not only the Vasa itself (which is - 500 years later - still spectecular and truly impressive) but also how the museum tells the story of the ship and how it was raised from Stockholm harbor. Several exhibitions tell about the political situation at the time, tthe lives of the sailors who were lost with the ship and the complicated process to find and raise the ship. When you come to Stockholm this is a must-see attraction.

Cafe Tabac: Cafe Tabac
This is a tapas bar (they also serve sandwiches) that is popular with the young locals. You can either sit in the bar area or the small restaurant, food is served in both. Do not judge the food by the cleanlyness of the bathrooms.

Sunriver Resort: Sunriver Resort
Sunriver is an enourmous resort complex with non only several hundred hotel rooms but also over 300 flyy furnished vacation homes that offer up to 6 bedrooms. The resort offers an huge spawith pool and tennis courts as well as three golf courses. The whole area offers tons of activities - skiing in winter and any imaginable outdoor activity in summer (hiking, biking, rock climbing, rafting etc.). If large, upscale resorts are your thing, then this is a good place to go.

BATS Improv Theatre: BATS Improv Theatre
BATS (Bay Area Theatre Sports) is the best improv group in the Bay Area. If you like performing arts, especially improv theatre, coming here could almost be worth a trip to the Bay Area by itself. But then: with improvised theatre you never know what you will see and how good it will be as everything is made up on the spot using suggestions from the audience. Shows are presented each Friday and Sturday at 8pm (and often also on Sunday night). Check out the webpage to see what type of show is performed as the formats vary. Many people feel that the group does a especially good job with long formats (one long play instead of several shorter ones; I personally can recommend the "True Fiction Magazine" format). If you have never been to an improv show, come here, be open minded and you will have a blast. If you have been to improv before, come to BATS and see some of the best improv in the US.

Hilton Portland & Executive Tower: Hilton Portland & Executive Tower
With almost 800 rooms the Hilton is the largest hotel in Oregon. The hotel does not feel that big, probably because it consists of two buildings: the original Hilton and a newer Hilton Executive Tower which is half a block away (so know which one you are staying in!). The rooms have recently been renovated but the best thing about the hotel is the location right in downtown, one block from Pioneer Square. A public parking garage is right next to the executive tower, overnight rates are $18. A cheaper SmartPark garage is 2 blocks away. In the mail building is a really nice health club which costs $10 for hotel guests (free if you are a Hilton status member) and offers not only workout machines but also a pool, jacuzzi, steam room and massages (for a fee). On the 11th floor of the Executive Tower is also a fitness center. It is much smaller, by far not as nice but free for all hotel guests.

Taliesin West: Taliesin West
This was for 20 years the winter home for world famous architect Frank Lloyd Wright (proablby best know for his design of the Guggenheim Museum in NYC). Lloyd designed the complex as a home, office and school for his architectural students. Tours give a background on his life and explain his therories like using local materials with Taliesin West being a perfect example. Even if you are not a big fan of architecture and design this is a good place to visit and enjoy.

Heard Museum: Heard Museum
This is one of the the best places to come to better understand native American art and history, especially in the Southwest. Therefore this is a great way to learn more about the 21 tribes that live in Arizona in the "Home: Natives People of the Southwest" exhibition. After visiting you will leave with a much better understanding of the native American culture and bigger appreciation for the arts of that culture.

Desert Botanical Garden: Desert Botanical Garden
If you want to learn about the Sonora Desert and its plants - this is the place to come. Located in Papago Park the garden showcases more than 20.000 plants of more than 4000 species (over 100 of them are endangered). As this is an outdoor attraction (wear the right shoes, bring water, hat and sunscreen!) it is best in summer to come early (park opens at 7am in the summer, otherwise at 8am) or late (then you should stay during sunset). Overall this is an excellent educational place to learn more about the desert.

Phoenix Art Museum: Phoenix Art Museum
The best thing about going to an art museum in Phoenix is that because of all the artwork they have to have excellent air conditining. At this museum the temperature is a constant 72 degrees every day which makes this place very appealing on a hot summer day. It is worth as visit as the museum hosts a 17,000 piece collection (the largest in the Southwest), ranging from the Renaissance to the present. Especially the contemporary / modern art is impressive with works by Picasso, Frida Kahlo, Calder, Moore, O'Keeffe, Rodin and others. Come during the day, see the art, escape the heat and maybe have a snack and a drink at the museum cafe.

B&H Photo Video: B&H Photo Video
This is probably the best store to buy photo or video equipment in the US, maybe even in the world. The selection is enourmous ranging from very simple, cheap cameras to professional movie cameras etc. This is why you will shop here with many professional photographers and film makers. The prices are very attractive. You might find something cheaper in one of the many small electronics stores that are all over New York. But in these stores any good deal you find will probably a fake or import product. At B&H you know that you will get an original product with a worldwide warranty. Even if you are not big into photography it is worth coming here - the place is just crazy. One some weekends shoppers form a line around the block before the store opens.
