  1. Flight Path Museum: A must for plane nerds

On the South side of LAX sits this awesome museum which is a must if you are into aviation history. The former charter terminal is now a shrine for the good old days. Pan Am, TWA, Western and many more - every airline has its own section with a display of uniforms, model aircraft, seats, photos, timetables etc. over time. You can also have a look at a DC-3 or do research in the library. And there is no spot at LAX where you will get closer to the South runway for plane spotting than at this museum. Best of all - it is free.

  2. Beim Sedlmayer: Zuenftig!

Hungry for breakfast? Try this traditional Bavarian restaurant which is also a good option for lunch or dinner. But the locals come around 10 or 11 in the morning to have a "Weisswurscht" which according to tradition has be eaten before the church bells ring at noon. Of course any meal has to be accompanied by a Bavarian beer, the bigger the better. An extensive menu offers options for every taste, the location in the heart of downtown is easy to reach, service is friendly - what more can you ask for.

  3. Cafe Hauptwache: City center rest

I you look for a place to rest and recharge after hours of shopping or sightseeing consider Cafe Hauptwache. This is basically THE center of town. For something light to eat, consider the Flammkuchen - very delicious. Service sometimes can be on the slow side, even when it is not that busy. Nevertheless a great spot to come to sit, relax and have a drink or snack.

  4. Casa del Matador: Great new place

New place on 23rd street with an open fire in the middle of the bar area, nice big tables and overall nice design. When we went it was rather slow but I think it was because they had just opened. Food has tex-mex twist but you can also get sandwiches, steak and seafood. The happy-hour from 4pm to 6pm and 10pm to 1am has great food deals with nachos, wings, tacos, small salad etc. all for $4 or $5. I think this place will do great, the only challenge they face is that is a little bit of from where all the main activity is on 23rd street. the advantage on the other hand is that the street car is really close-by. The liquor license they have does not allow any children in the place.

  5. Katsuya - Brentwood: Designer Sushi

Katsuya has two locations in LA: one in Hollywood and one in Brentwood where you even have a chance to get a table with a reservation made on the same day. Both restaurants have been designed by Philippe Starck, one of the leading hotel and restaurant designers. The interior is really nice but avoid the tables near the door where a draft can damper your dining experience. The food is excellent with great sushi, sashimi and traditional Japanese set menus at - considering the location - reasonable prices.

  6. Ciudad: A great choice

Great Latin American food with dishes from Latin America, Spain and Portugal combined with friendly, efficient service. I had the chicken milanesa (Argentinien dish) and it was aweseome. If you are in downtown LA for lunch, this is a good choice.

  7. Shoya: Come for food not for service

Even after moving to a bigger location this is probably still one of the smallest restaurants in Munich. Neither atmosphere nor service are great but food and prices are. If you are looking for a real Japanese restaurant in the heart of downtown - this is the place. Expect to wait and expect to be kicked out an hour. The menu offers a wide variety of fish and noodle dishes.

  8. Sydney Opera House: Have to see it ...

When you come to Sydney as a visitor a stop at the Opera House is a must. This landmark was opened by Queen Elisabeth II in 1973 and is home home of Opera Australia, the Sydney Theatre Company and the Sydney Symphony. Even if you are not a performing arts fan you should stop by and admire the architectural design. If you are more interested and have more time, you can take one of several tours that are offered, the "Essential Tour" takes an hour and costs a not-so-cheap AUD 32. If you want a more intimate experience the "Backstage Tour" takes you and 7 other visitors behind the scenes - for AUD 150.

  9. Royal Palace / Kungliga Slottet: See the king at work

A palace with more than 600 rooms - it must be nice to be the king of Sweden! Plus the location is hard to beat: located on a hill in the city center with great views of the city and the water. The largest royal palace in the world is not only home and office for the royal family, it also houses three outstanding museums: the Treasury with all the shiny jewels, the Tre Kronor Museum that portrays the palaces medieval history and Gustav III's Museum of Antiquities. Each day the changing of the guards takes place at 12:15pm (Sundays the guards sleep in and change at 1:15pm).

  10. Boeing Factory Tour: Impressive building, impressive production

Maybe you came to Seattle by plane, maybe even on a Boeing jet. Did you ever wonder how these planes are built? Use your visit to Seattle to find out. Just 30 miles north in Everett Boeing offers tours through its production plant for 747, 767, 777 and now 787. The production facility is enormous - the largest building in the world by volume. Even if you are not an airplane fan, this is a tour you should not miss. But plan for your visit: tickets can be reserved online (highly recommended in summer), there are absolutely no cameras of any kind, personal items like purses, cell phone etc. allowed on the tour. Children must be at least 122 cm tall, babies are not allowed.
