  1. Paragon Restaurant & Bar: good food in the pearl

My husband and I wanted to try something new and after looking at the website, we thought we would try Paragon. The booth seating was nice and we were able to watch the entire place from our seats. I ordered the chicken dish and the crab cakes to start and my husband ordered a garden salad and the beef dish. The salad was very generously sized and dressed to his liking but he was dissappointed with his steak. My crab cakes were a bit boring but the rotissary chicken came already de-boned, and two comfort food side dishes of macaroni and cheese and spinach. Really good. Overall and fun place to go and watch folks too. Over half of the place is a bar and you can go and eat and drink there. I would recommend that you eat an appetizer and have a cocktail instead of a full meal.

  2. Besaw's Cafe: Great breakfast place

I love Sunday morning brunch and this is the best place in the Northwest area to do just that. Make sure you plan ahead though since they don't take reservations and there is always a wait. You can usually get immediate service at the bar/counter though and it's always the best choice when you are alone. My favorite are the eggs with NW salmon and creme cheese scramble. Very yummy. Service is always prompt once you are seated and they will provide coffee while you wait. They also service lunch and dinner at other times but I prefer their breakfast service.

  3. Downtown Mystic: Go for a stroll and shop

Strolling along Main street and shopping are some of the best things to do while in Mystic. Some of my favorite stores are Framers of the Lost Art and Whyevernot. Stay some time at the corner bookstore and read about the area in a wide selection of unique books about area.

  4. Mystic Aquarium & Institute for Exploration: Great with Kids

I've been to many aqauriums all over the world and I always compare it to the Mystic Aquarium. An immaculately kept facililty is something you and the kids will love. The aquarium has great exhibits including dolphin shows and rare penguins. Crowds may drive you crazy in the summer so if you go in the summer, go early.

  5. B.F. Clyde's Cider Mill: A piece of Americana

Growing up less than 2 miles from Clydes, my mother used to take us here in the fall during the apple harvest. A National Historic Landmark and family run since 1881, it is a great side trip on your Mystic tour. The only steam powered cider mill in the US. It is a bonded winery producing hard cider and apple wines, and also for the kids, apples and normal cider. Fresh cider is made during the fall, open seasonally from 9-5 seven days a week.

  6. Newport Mansions - various: Worth the money

Where did the Rockfellers summer? Go to Newport RI and you will see houses that were only considered "cottages" during the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. Pick up brochures and select a few that you will want to go to since there are over a dozen of these fantastic homes to see. I recommend The Breakers, Chateau-sur-Mer, Rosecliff and The Elms. However also of note is the Green Animals Topiary Garden, Marble House, and Kingscote. Seasonal activities can make these places even more beautiful. Premium tours to see all houses for adults are $49 and youth passes are $19. Not cheap but a must see for a layover in Rhode Island or Massachusetts.

  7. Captain Daniel Packer Inne: Eat with history

Experience fine fare in an 1754 Inne that has been serving people since this year. On the National Historic Register, you will feel that you have stepped back in history when you enjoy fine seafood or steaks and a lovely wine list. Enjoy the very cozy bar downstairs that fits about 30 people maximum and has a great fireplace. Sometimes the bar has live music as well. This is one of my favorite places to meet friends especially on a cold winter night. Have a hot todie and stay a while.

  8. In-N-Out burger: Do it Animal Style

Are you craving a greasy hamburger? If this is up your alley, then this is the place for you. A California institution, people from all over the country come to eat a "double-double" ordered "Animal Style", loaded with lots of stuff. Only fries, burgers and milk shakes here, leave the vegetarians at home. Worth the trip and fantastic if you have a hangover. This is the best meal you can get for under $6.

  9. Los Angeles: Driving nightmare

Whatever you, don't drive during the hours of 5 am to 9 am and 3 pm to 7 pm on any of the local Loa Angeles highways. Los Angeles traffic is the worst in the US for a reason and unless you would like to sit and listen to the same programming on your radio, just wait until you are out of the hours listed earlier. Take any public or local transportation you can find. Buses are great in the Santa Monica area or if you are Downtown, take the train. It is totally worth your sanity.

  10. The Brown Palace Hotel: The Brown Palace Hotel

Now I'm not a big Denver fan but stayed here for a week and truly enjoyed it. Frank E. Edbrooke designed this hotel in the popular Italian Renaissance style when it opened in 1892. Presidents and the rich and famous stay here and if you look carefully, you might see one of them. The rooms are decorated in antiques and very classy.
