  • Doubletree Paradise Valley Resort Scottsdale: Could be Better

Supposedly a 4-star resort. Watch out for the 25% Incidental Charge they hit you with when checking in . . . yeah . . . I know, I had never heard of it either. Only found out about it when my VISA/Debit card was denied. Have a daily limit of $1500.00. Between the $300 hit from the rental car company andy the $1225.00 for the hotel, my card was denied. My hotel bill was supposed to be $980.00 (which it was). Imagine my surprise when I called my bank to complain and they explained the limit and that the hotel had upped my $980.00 charge up to $1225.00. I don't use the "incidentals" . . . movies, mini bar, etc., so they removed the fee and recharged my card at the correct rate . . . and guess what? it went through. For a conference attendee this is probably a good hotel . . . for the casual vacation visitor I'd look elsewhere. Parking is scarce . . . especially if there is a conference going on at the hotel (which there was). Something called "New Life" had their conference and approx. 1500 new age people were in attendence. Conference attendees should not be allowed to take over the hotel lobby during the day to offer massage, aeromatic therapy, etc. The poor regular guest . . . like me . . . could not navigate from the pool to the business center without literally stepping over someone giving a massage. I've never seen so many people in a hotel lobby. Has two pools (north and south) which are nice. South pool was the place to be as the north pool was jammed with conference attendees from 12:00-2:00 who were taking lunch breaks. Restaurant prices are extremely high . . . we made a point to eat off-site. The room was nice and large and the price was within our budget.

  • Taneko Japanese Tavern: One Word . .. WONDERFUL

Make a reservation. We had a reservation and had a 5 minute wait while our table was prepared. Our table was next to the bar so our server did double duty as the waitress/bar tender. The service was great. First time here and the waitress took the time to explain the menu, portion sizes, and offered personal recommendations. Prices are not outrageous, food is good, and service is even better. Highlight of the evening was sitting across from a Scottsdale mogul named Tony and his companion who bought numerous bottles of wine and then shared them with the service personnel so that they would know the flavor of the different wines. It was amusing to watch numerous service personnel come by for their own personal wine tasting. In speaking to our server I found out that he is a regular and does this every time he comes into the restaurant.
